Aperol Spritz is a classic Italian cocktail that has few ingredients and it’s part of the aperitif culture, Mediterranean cuisine and refreshing summer cocktails. Anytime I think of an Aperol Spritz, I think of the Amalfi Coast. But here in Florida, the cocktail gets warm before you’re halfway through it. So inspired by local frozen tropical drinks, I wanted to see if I can make a Frozen Aperol Spritz!!
Classic Aperol Spritz
Classic Aperol spritz is super simple. You don’t need any fancy bar equipment or measuring cups, no cocktail shakers either.
To make a classic Aperol spritz get a wine glass, add some ice. Then pour about 3 ozs of Aperol, same amount of Prosecco, a splash of sparkling water and garnish with fresh orange slices.
Usually I tend to eyeball the ingredients, add same amount of Aperol and Prosecco (about ⅓ glass each).
Ingredients for Frozen Aperol Spritz
I use the same ingredients needed for classic Aperol spritz but to make this a frozen drink, you’d need lots of ice. And I was afraid so much ice might change the balance of taste that is so perfectly balanced on the classic Aperol spritz.
So I decided to freeze ice cubes with orange juice! Blending the super cold Aperol with Prosecco and frozen orange juice turned out to be the perfect blend to create the frozen aperol spritz.
In this case I used Cara Cara oranges which have a beautiful orange color that matches this drink perfectly. It makes you think of golden sunsets over the Mediterranean:).
Pro-Tip – Make sure Aperol and Prosecco are super cold too before blending!
Blend orange ice cubes with Aperol and Prosecco until you get a slushy like consistency. Pour over a coupe glass, garnish with fresh orange slices and enjoy:). Cheers!
Frozen Aperol Spritz
Equipment
- 1 Blender
- 1 ice cube tray
Ingredients
- 2 oranges best to use Cara Cara or blood oranges
- 3 ozs Aperol
- 3 ozs Prosecco
- 2 ice cubes (extra if needed)
Instructions
- Squeeze oranges and add the juice to an ice cube tray. Freeze the night before if possible or about 4 hours before you need to make the drinks.
- I tend to chill the aperol and prosecco in the refrigerator for few hours beforehand. You can also try to freeze the aperol like I did with orange juice.
- When it's time to make the drink get 4 ice cubes with orange juice, 3 ozs aperol and 3 ozs prosecco. Add them to a blender, blend until smooth. If it's not looking like a slushy yet, chances are you need a little more ice. Feel free to add either more orange ice cubes or regular ice and blend few more seconds.
- Serve on a coupe glass and garnish with fresh orange slices. Cheers!
Notes
- Prep the night before for best results – freeze ice cubes with orange juice and even Aperol if you so desire.
- Use colorful oranges like Cara Cara oranges or Blood Oranges for better visual appeal.
