Once you try this iced Hazelnut Shaken Espresso drink, it will become your favorite summer drink!!! I was inspired by the new menu at Starbucks to create this shaken espresso drink but I really don’t know how they make theirs.
I loved this shaken espresso drink with syrup and oat milk the moment I tried it. It reminds me of shakerato Italian coffee drinks during summer.
Ingredients
Let’s talk ingredients which are very simple.
- Ice – use some fun ice shapes for a pretty drink:).
- Hazelnut syrup – there are many hazelnut syrups out there, you might want to do a little tasting to see which one is your favorite. I have settled on Torani Hazelnut for my coffees.
- Espresso – I use Nespresso pods for my espressos. I still have an old Nespresso machine from over a decade ago, but it still works and there are still classic pods available for sale so I’m grateful! Nocciola and Venezia are my favorites pods for iced coffees but you can pick any flavor espresso you like.
- Oat milk – that’s my favorite milk for this shaken espresso but you can’t go wrong with 2% regular milk or Almond Milk.
Making Hazelnut Shaken Espresso
The steps for this nutty flavored shaken espresso are very simple once you have few setups ready.
- Add hazelnut syrup to a mason jar or cocktail shaker
- Add espresso coffee over hazelnut syrup. Add some ice to mason jar and shake! Set it aside.
- Get a serving cup for frappuccinos or frozen coffees (glass is best). Fill it halfaway through with ice. Add the shaken coffee with hazelnut syrup over ice.
- Make a little oat milk foam with an Aeroccino machine or with a frother. Pour foam over the iced coffee.
- Top off the rest of the cup with cold oat milk! Add a stirrer, mix, swirl and sip:). Cheers and enjoy!

- If you like your drink to have some foam on top, get 2 ozs of oat milk and froth it with a frother or an Aeroccino machine. Pour over the glass with ice and espresso.
- Finally fill up the empty space on the glass cup with cold oat milk. Stir, mix and sip:). Enjoy!
Notes
- Make one serving at a time, even if you’re making the same drink for more than one person.
- Feel free to adapt the recipe and equipment you use to what you have available. This way of making this iced shaken espresso drink is the way I have found convenient for me because of coffee machines and what I have been using for years.
- You can replace oat milk with almond milk or regular milk. Soy milk and coconut milk would work too, but I haven’t personally tested with those so don’t know how it affects taste.
- You can use decaf pods if you like the taste of this shaken espresso but don’t want to overdo the caffeine.
- One ounce of espresso is about 1 shot of espresso. So you’d need about 2 espresso shots for this drink (equivalent of a grande drink at Starbucks).
- I can’t emphasize enough to pick a good quality coffee! Pick your favorite coffee for espresso, but you won’t regret picking a good quality coffee.

While I do realize how easy is to find not one of two but a variety of hazelnut syrups in USA where I live now, I know that this type of syrup is not widely available in every country around the world. So if you want to make your own hazelnut syrup and store it, you definitely can. Boil water, sugar and chopped hazelnuts in a saucepan. Lower heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. Let the syrup cool down before straining. Voila, you have hazelnut syrup:).
Yes you can. My old time favorite is caramel so you can make this shaken espresso drink with caramel syrup instead of hazelnut syrup.
