When I think about winter salads, I remember an orange salad my mom used to make. It’s simple, it has few ingredients and it brightens up the table. Plus it’s delicious!
My mom used to make it with oranges, onions, olive oil and olives. I decided to add some greens and avocado because, come on everything has avocado on nowadays:). No but really, I love avocado and I can really put them on anything.

Winter Orange Salad
This Mediterranean Orange Salad goes really well with hearty dishes, meats, bbq etc. Oranges are high in fiber and help digestion. Also, oranges help with nutrients absorption so it’s great to add them to any meal.
The salad on its own it’s vegan, however in most coastal areas of the Mediterranean the salad is served along roasts and meats. It is said that orange and most citrus fruits help break out the fat in foods.
Oranges are a winter fruit and their price goes way down in December so I always stock up. If we don’t eat them in few days, then I chop the oranges up into a salad.
Orange Salad Recipe Notes
This orange salad is very easy to make and toss together at last minute. I like to use a box of baby arugula from my local grocery store because it comes triple washed and it saves me preparation time.
You can replace arugula with spinach or spring mix, however this pairing tastes better with arugula.
As per dressing, you can choose to just pour the desired amount of olive oil on this salad & toss it or use a more elaborate dressing that I will include in the recipe below. Usually when it’s just us 4, I add olive oil. But if I have guests over, then I prepare a special dressing.
After you peel the onion, put it in a bowl of cold water to remove some of the smell and acidity.
Orange Salad with Arugula and Avocado
Ingredients
- 5 oz arugula
- 4 navel oranges medium size
- 2 hass avocados
- 0.5 cups kalamata olives pitted
- 1 shallot
Dressing
- 1 orange
- 4 tbsps White Balsamic Vinegar
- 4 tbsps olive oil
- 1 tsp honey
- 0.5 tsp salt
Instructions
- Slice the shallot thin and add it in cold water so the smell can dissipate. Leave for about 10 minutes.
- Arrange the arugula either in a salad bowl or shallow, wide salad dish.
- Peel the oranges and cut them in desired shapes. I like to peel oranges in a spiral form, I always have as a child.
- Add cut oranges, avocados, olives and shallots to the salad.
Orange Dressing
- Squeeze the orange for the dressing.
- Mix white balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, honey and orange juice. Pour dressing on salad as desired.

Other Citrus Salad Recipes
As you can tell, I love incorporating oranges in my salads. It must be the mix of citrus flavors mixed with salt and olive oil that gets me every time:)). I have to admit, I clean the plate’s dressing at the end with some warm bread. Best bite of the whole plate, YUMM!!

This sounds lovely. I never really eat oranges anymore as I find them messy. I’d never thought of a salad!

If you peel them in the spiral shape i showed in the post, then slice them with a knife, you won’t even feel it that they’re messy.
