These roasted harissa potatoes are spicy, crispy and they taste great with yogurt based dips. We use them as a side dish or even as an appetizer when we have just few guests over:). Bonus – these potatoes take very little active time to prepare!

I love potatoes as a side dish, as main dish, cooked with herbs, baked or fried. In my native country of Albania we often bake potatoes with chicken or potatoes with lamb, well condimented and with plenty of olive oil.

See some of my potato recipes below:

What Potatoes Are Best For This Side Dish?

I love to use Gold Potatoes for this roasted harissa potatoes recipe. I find them easy to peel, good size and easy to roast. You however can experiment with different type of potatoes and maybe just adjust baking time accordingly. I would love to hear from you in comments of any adjustments you made:). Recipes are meant as guide, not set in stone so do your thing:) .

I love peeling the potatoes and placing them in a bowl of water while I peel all of them. I tend to use about 3 pounds at a time.

Potatoes on a counter, it's about 3 lbs of raw potatoes.

Once you have peeled all potatoes, then you can slice and drain them in a colander. Add potatoes to a glass bowl, add seasonings of your choice or just follow my recipe card below for step by step instructions.

Place potatoes on baking sheet with parchment paper, bake until golden brown:). Serve with your favorite dip!

    Harissa Powder or Harissa Paste??

I love harissa seasoning. The pepper flavor is just fantastic!! Depending where you live, markets may have different options for you. For example, some grocery stores in USA have both the spicy and mild version of (Amazon affiliate) Mina’s Harissa paste.

Harissa – harissa is a hot chili paste that originated in North Africa. This flavorful condiment has hints of citrus, caraway seeds, coriander seeds and it’s usually in olive oil.

The paste in my opinion is great with chicken. Try it on a crockpot cooking with chicken:).

But only recently I was able to find the powder harissa seasoning. I find this perfect for roasted potatoes and vegetables because I can make them as spicy and as crispy as I want with dry seasoning.

    Equipment

    • 1 large baking sheet
    • parchment paper

    Ingredients

    • 3 lbs gold potatoes
    • 3 tbsps olive oil
    • 1.5 tsp sea salt I usually increase up to 1 tbsp because I like the potatoes salty
    • 1 tbsp oregano
    • 1 tbsp harissa powder add more or less to taste
    • 0.5 lemon freshly squeezed over potatoes
    • 2 twigs rosemary (optional)

    Instructions

    • Peel the potatoes and add them to a bowl of cold water. It will prevent them from browning.
    • Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees F. Line up a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Slice the potatoes and add them to a mixing bowl. Add all the other ingredients: olive oil, salt, harissa powder, oregano, lemon juice, fresh rosemary leaves etc etc. Mix well until all the slices are well coated.
    • Spread the potatoes on the baking sheet, try to avoid overlap.
    • Bake for about 20 minutes or until golden brown. Baking time might vary a bit based on how thin you cut the potato slices. If you use the middle rack, you don't need to flip the potatoes.
    • Serve with your favorite dip or as a side dish. Enjoy:)

    Notes

    • If you don’t like using fresh rosemary leaves because of how difficult they’re to remove afterwards, then you can infuse olive oil with rosemary and use that olive oil to add over the potatoes.
