This Baked Feta Appetizer is the perfect Mediterranean Meze. You can add other sides like kalamata olives with lemon and grape tomatoes as pictured below. Add some pita bread or sliced baguettes to dip on the olive oil as you share this delicious appetizer!

A set of appetizers: from top to bottom you see a dish with kalamata olives and lemon, then baked feta cheese with herbs and lastly grape tomatoes garnished with mint. Next to the 3 sides dishes there's lemon slices and mint leaves too.

    Mediterranean Mezes

Mediterranean Mezes are small appetizers like tapas or bocaditos in other cultures.

It’s customary in most Mediterranean countries, including my native country of Albania to sit with friends and family and share different mezes ahead of the main meal. Obviously this is done while enjoying some wine, beer or favorite cocktail.

If sitting down, usually these types of appetizers including the baked feta appetizer are served family style on the table and everyone serves a bit on their own plate. Something that people can find surprising is that in the Mediterranean people love to dip their bread on the olive oil of the Greek salad or the herbed olive oil of the baked feta. It’s sooo good, almost the best bite of the whole meal!!

    How to Bake Feta Cheese?

Feta cheese is a typical cheese in many Mediterranean countries. It’s produced in blocks, stored in brine and made from sheep’s milk (or combination of sheep and goat milk).

Feta cheese has a distinct flavor, it’s salty and crumbles easily. It’s usually part of many Mediterranean dishes and salads.

You don’t need much to bake feta cheese. You need a small baking tray, a block of feta cheese, olive oil and favorite herbs. I love using oregano and rosemary. You can add additional ingredients to taste like honey, spices, tomatoes etc.

Ingredients for baked feta cheese - feta cheese block in a baking tray, fresh rosemary, dry oregano and olive oil.

    How To Serve Baked Feta?

The possibilities on how to serve this baked feta appetizer are endless. The simplest way would be to add some kalamata olives, tomatoes and or a greek salad. Then you can add pita bread, sliced fresh homemade bread or baguettes.

When it comes to kalamata olives, you can just add them from a jar to a serving dish or you can fancy them up a little bit. Add 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp lemon juice and bite size slices of lemon. Then mix it up and let it chill while feta is baking.
