This Eggnog Cocktail with Kahlua and Rum is such a treat not only for the Winter Holidays, but honestly anytime you feel like you need a dessert in a cocktail cup!!

A rich, luscious eggnog cocktail served in a coupe cocktail cup. Cup is placed in a festive setting for the holidays and is garnished with cinnamon and a cinnamon stick.
Eggnog Cocktail with Rum and Kahlua

This creamy, luscious eggnog cocktail is spiked with both dark rum and kahlua for a complex flavor. My husband and I enjoy a cup of this cocktail as we get close to Christmas after kids have gone to bed.

If you are looking for more Christmas cocktails, checkout my Coconut Christmas Cocktail or my Sugared Cranberries Vodka Cocktail.

    Storebought Eggnog or Homemade?

I say use whichever is easier. If you went grocery shopping and remembered to buy your favorite brand’s eggnog, great! This cocktail will taste amazing!!

If you don’t have eggnog and don’t want to go out in the crazy traffic of December, you can make your own and chill it. This is what we did when we were once snowed in a vacation in Tennessee.

We had enough groceries for a week, our cabin was on a hill and you couldn’t drive down until snow was cleared. We made homemade eggnog and enjoyed it in the evening by the fireplace with just rum, didn’t have kahlua there.

    Ingredients

I like to shake each cocktail separately to get the texture, temperature and mix just right. This cocktail looks pretty on a coupe type glass garnished with both cinnamon and cinnamon sticks.

    • Eggnog – use homemade or store bought. Keep it chilled!
    • Kahlua – I have used both regular Kahlua or blonde Kahlua and they both work great.
    • Rum – I love to use a spiced, dark rum for this drink. It just mixes really well with eggnog.
    • Pinch nutmeg
    • Pinch cinnamon

I shake all this with ice then serve over the coupe glass. Then I garnish with more cinnamon and a cinnamon stick.

Additional garnishes you can use are chocolate dipped spoons, star anise or any other festive garnishes.

    Ratios for the Cocktail

The coupe glass I use is almost 10 ozs so the ratios I use make a great cocktail that would measure up to 10 ozs. I love to serve the coupe glass almost full to the rim so it looks pretty.

So I tend to plan for the 10 oz glas this way:

    • Normal eggnog cocktail – 8 ozs eggnog, 1 oz kahlua, 1 oz rum.
    • Strong eggnog cocktail – 7 ozs eggnog, 1.5 oz kahlua and 1.5 oz rum.

Note – This cocktail is meant for adult of legal drinking age. Please drink responsibly!!

    What is Eggnog?

Eggnog is a thick, dairy non-alcoholic mix that is similar to custard in taste. Eggnog is creamy, smooth and velvety texture wise, it has hints of cinnamon and nutmeg and it is usually used for cocktails around the holidays. Since it is associated with the holidays, eggnog evokes the festive feelings of spending time with friends and family!

Can I use just Kahlua or just rum to spike up this drink?

Yes you definitely can. But keep in mind that they have different alcohol content so the ratios of mixing the cocktail might change.
