We love coleslaw in our family and a lot of times I would end up buying the coleslaw and cook the main dish. But once I made this Apple Coleslaw I decided to always make my own as it’s so easy and the flavor doesn’t compare with store bought.

Today I’m serving this creamy & crunchy coleslaw with bbq ribs but other times I have served it with fried chicken, grilled meats and even beef milanesa.
Ingredients
Before we dive into ingredients, I want to mention that you can choose to chop cabbage and carrots yourself or buy a pre washed/pre-chopped bag with regular cabbage, red cabbage and carrot matchsticks. This saves so much time!
- Coleslaw mix (two different cabbages and carrots)
- 1 red apple (I used a gala apple)
- 1 green or yellow apple (options Granny Smith apple, Golden delicious etc)
- 3 green onions
- Juice of half lemon – drizzle it over diced apples to prevent them from browning.
Then for the dressing I used:
- Mayonnaise
- Juice of half lemon
- Brown sugar
- Sea salt
Sonila’s Tips and Notes
So this recipe is easily customizable because you can add ingredients like red pepper, broccoli, toasted almonds etc to adjust taste to your liking.
Brown sugar might not be everyone’s choice for the dressing. I feel it’s perfect with apples. But you can use regular sugar instead of brown sugar. Also, less is more sometimes.
Make sure to add the lemon juice over chopped apple, it will prevent the apples from browning.
Apple Coleslaw
Equipment
- 1 mason jar
Ingredients
- 10 ozs coleslaw mix with green cabbage, purple cabbage and carrots
- 1 red apple I usually use Gala
- 1 yellow or green apple I usually pick either a Golden Delicious or Granny Smith
- 3 green onions
- 1 lemon
- ¾ cup mayonnaise
- 2 tbsps brown sugar
- 0.5 tsp sea salt adjust to taste
Instructions
- Pour the coleslaw mix in a large glass bowl. Wash and dry the apples. Remove the core and dice them with the skin on. Add over the coleslaw mix. Clean and chop the green onions, add those too. Sprinkle sea salt over the ingredients.
- Juice the lemon. Pour half the juice over diced apples to prevent them from browning.
- Get a mason jar. Add mayonnaise, the remaining lemon juice and brown sugar. Mix until all the ingredients are well incorporated.
- Pour dressing over the ingredients in the bowl. Mix well and refrigerate coleslaw for at least an hour before serving. Enjoy:)
Notes
- I estimate this coleslaw yields about 8 servings but in the recipe I wrote 6 since we tend to serve bigger servings of this side dish.
- Pick a good quality mayonnaise for the dressing.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator. Next day, drain the coleslaw a bit and transfer to a new bowl.
