This Blue Spirulina Smoothie with Fruits and Coconut Water is inspired by a local Miami smoothie called Coco Azul. While I love this smoothie so much, I had to learn to make a version of it at home since the price adds up quick.

How True to Coco Azul is this recipe?

According to Pura Vida website, their Coco Azul smoothie has these ingredients: coconut water, banana, pineapple, mango, blue spirulina, collagen protein, hemp seed,
    shaved coconut.

I used all the ingredients they list in their website and I also added blueberries to the mix because I felt they matched the flavor and color perfectly.

As per quantities, I had to do a lot of trial and error to get to this recipe since I don’t know the exact formula this restaurant uses.

So pretty much I have tried to mimic a delicious smoothie, have come pretty close and love my recipe. Maybe it’s not exactly the same, but it’s really delicious and well worth it to make it at home.

I also think that maybe I’m using different brand of blue spirulina than they do since my smoothie comes out with a stronger blue color.

    Blue Spirulina

I used to buy green or regular spirulina in the past to add to my smoothies and only recently learned of blue spirulina. Here is an article from WebMD that details health benefits of spirulina.

I wouldn’t be able to tell you when it’s ok for you to add this supplement to your smoothies and when not, so please check with your doctor if it’s ok for you to get this supplement.

I personally use it for its antioxidant and antiinflammatory qualities.

Stores around me don’t really carry Blue Spirulina, except Whole Foods. The only one available at my local Whole Foods it’s this brand of blue spirulina, feel free to pick your favorite brand.

    Sonila’s Tips and Notes

One of the reasons smoothie places make fantastic smoothies is the quality of their blenders. But you have to use what you have at home, no need to make an expensive investment just to make a smoothie.

You can use frozen fruits or freeze fresh fruits. Sometimes I do a combination of this. For example, today I bought frozen mangoes and fresh pineapple, bananas and blueberries. I froze enough to make the smoothie.

Add the frozen fruits to the blender cup, add hemp seeds, spirulina, coconut flakes or shaved coconut and finally add coconut water. I tend to refrigerate a bottle coconut water few hours before making the smoothie.

The purpose of using frozen fruits and chilled coconut water is to make a smooth mix without using ice.

Recipe card below is for 1 serving but you can adjust accordingly if you are making more smoothies.

Pro-Tip: Freeze portions of blueberries, bananas that are about to go brown, pineapple and mangos in a ziplock bag in the freezer and use anytime you want to make the smoothie.
